De Tolstraat is een straat die gelegen is in de wijk de Pijp in Amsterdam. De straat loopt van het Henrick de Keijserplein naar de Amsteldijk en kruist ongeveer halverwege de Van Woustraat.
De Tolstraat, tot 1896 Verversstraat en Ververspad, ontleent haar naam aan een aldaar geplaatst tolhek. Na de annexatie van dit deel van de gemeente Nieuwer-Amstel door Amsterdam in 1896 is het tolhek verplaatst en kreeg de straat zijn huidige naam om verwarring met de al bestaande Verversstraat te voorkomen.
In de Tolstraat is de diamantslijperij Asscher gevestigd. Het gebouw uit 1907, naar het ontwerp van architect G. van Arkel (1858-1919), wordt nog gedeeltelijk door de diamantslijperij gebruikt.
Op de hoek van de Tolstraat en de Amsteldijk bevindt zich het voormalige raadhuis van Nieuwer-Amstel. Van 1914 tot 2007 was hier het Gemeentearchief van Amsterdam gehuisvest.
Voorts bevindt zich aan de Tolstraat een filiaal van de openbare bibliotheek, gevestigd in een pand dat in 1926 als tempel voor de Theosofische Vereniging werd opgetrokken naar ontwerp van L.C. van der Vlugt. The Tolstraat is a street that is located in the Pijp district in Amsterdam. The street runs from Henrick de Keijserplein to Amsteldijk and crosses approximately halfway between Van Woustraat.
The Tolstraat, until 1896 Verversstraat and Ververspad, derives its name from a toll gate placed there. After the annexation of this part of the Nieuwer-Amstel municipality by Amsterdam in 1896, the toll gate was moved and the street was given its current name to prevent confusion with the existing Verversstraat.
The Asscher diamond cutter is located in Tolstraat. The building from 1907, designed by architect G. van Arkel (1858-1919), is still partially used by the diamond cutter.
The former town hall of Nieuwer-Amstel is located on the corner of Tolstraat and Amsteldijk. The Amsterdam Municipal Archives were housed here from 1914 to 2007. It is now transformed into a five star Hotel.
There is also a branch of the public library on Tolstraat, housed in a building that was erected in 1926 as a temple for the Theosophical Society, designed by L.C. van der Vlugt. It is seen as a textbook example of building the New Objectivity. Later the building was given a cultural purpose. The name then changed to Cultura.
